Why HAIR really matters…FOLLOW@hairadvicebymoni

Some people look at me like I’m crazy, when I say, “HAIR REALLY MATTERS,” but let’s talk about this for a minute… Have you ever had a bad hair day? Have you ever taken a look in the mirror and wanted to hide from your own self? I guarantee if you’ve headed out in the world and felt the need to wear a hat, it’s probably because you didn’t have time to style your hair that day, am I right?

OK well, let’s take it another step further…have you ever had a bad haircut? I know from experience this has caused some to go into hiding, or take a long extended vacation, just so they can let their hair grow out! Even if you did do that bang trim to yourself! (clearing my throat, you all know who you are)
Let’s talk more seriously about why HAIR REALLY MATTERS. It’s not just a vanity thing, I’m seriously talking about your overall HEALTH here. How many of you know that some common causes of hair loss are related to stress? Not just stress because you have thoughts of stressful things, but because when you are living through stressful periods in your life, you’re releasing chemicals and hormones that end up going into your bloodstream and landing in the papilla of your hair, even while your sleeping! Sound scary? Try not to worry, this big word just means the root of your hair. Now can you see why I can honestly say “HAIR REALLY MATTERS?” TRUTH is, in the root of your hair, lies the root of all your problems!

Did you know the most common steroid hormone identified with hair loss, is called cortisol. Yes, that’s right, the same one that causes stubborn belly fat! When you really start thinking about it, what gives you less confidence? Is it your belly fat or your thinning hair? Is it safe to say both are not very good? What better time than the present, to figure out what the root cause of your stress is? Especially if it might mean you don’t end up pudgy with a receding hairline, in the next few years or ever, for that matter! Remember time flies between salon visits. You can trust me when I say, the hair that is growing, will keep on growing, while the ones that are pooping out will only keep suffering a slow death.

Try not to worry your “pretty little head,” cause it will only make things worse, BUT there’s yet another critical factor called hormones that also play a big role in your hair story too. As we go through our lives and our hormones dip and flip, so does our hair. The cowlicks dip in the hairline due to thinning and as we transition to all of our inevitable greying journey. Sad, but true, it happens to all of us at some point. I’m here to say I’ve seen people go through severe hair loss due to hormone changes and infertility and actually recover fine from it. Fun fact about me is, I’ve seen more women have babies than I can even count. Sometimes the hair loss is major and sometimes the hair loss is minor. There are so many extenuating factors related to thinning and loss of hair including surgery, a severe illness, a death in the family, a divorce, or even the loss of a job can be enough stress to cause one of my clients to lose a substantial amount of hair.

Now that I’m fifty, I can see the benefits of the good habits I set earlier in life, not that there isn’t always room for improvement. Seeking balance in your life to me means letting go of the crap I can’t change today. I write it down on a piece of paper, put it into the hands of the universe and let it go. If I know one thing for sure, it’s the answer to one of life’s important questions…”What came first the chicken or the egg?” (The stress or the hair loss?) To keep my hormones balanced in my hair and scalp,I wash weekly with a DETOX shampoo! I ALWAYS wash my hair two or three times when I do cleanse as per the label instructions say WASH, RINSE & REPEAT for good reason. The first shampoo is to wash your HAIR and the second shampoo is to wash your SCALP!

If you are struggling through a difficult time I recommend you reach out to get support. Understanding that your body is going through a traumatic experience is one of the critical steps you can take in pausing your own chemical response. The next thing you can do is seek the support of your doctor, your hairstylist, your family and friends, let them know that you were going through a difficult time, and would appreciate some ease and support. I know being vulnerable can be tough, but over the years behind the chair, I’ve learned people want to be there for you, if you let them.

In the meantime if you’re going through a difficult time and feel that It is taking a serious toll on your hair DM me for product advice.
